Language of instruction:

Contents:
This course has roughly two goals: 1) Introduction to both theory and practical application of chromatographic analyses and separation techniques, and understanding and using basic isolation techniques for components of various chemical classes. 2) Introduction to both theory and practical applications of spectroscopic methods aimed towards the structural analysis of organic compounds, e.g. as obtained via the methods described under 1). In 1) a.o. attention is given to the analysis of preservatives and sugars using a variety of techniques (e.g. TLC, HPLC, gas chromatography, and capillary electrophoresis), and to test the purity of samples obtained with these techniques. In 2) the combination of UV/VIS spectroscopy, IR spectroscopy, NMR and mass spectrometry is discussed and used. During the practical work these methods will be applied towards the elucidation of the structure of unknown compounds.
Learning outcomes:
- be able to independently understand and use chromatographic and isolation procedures;
- apply spectroscopic techniques in the structural analysis of organic compounds;
- motivate choices between various techniques;
- be able to interpret spectral data, and present the results obtained during the practical work in a clear and concise report.
Activities:
Following lectures. Study of the books. Problem solving. Practical courses. Writing reports. Case study.
Examination:
Written exam with open questions. Practical work marked based on practical level, input during practical classes and reports.
