Language of instruction:
Dutch or English
Assumed knowledge on:
MAT-11806
Contents:
- inferences about one population, two populations and more than two populations (tests and confidence intervals for central values and variances);
- tests and confidence intervals for poportions in one, two or more than two populations (goodness of fit test, contingency tables);
- choosing the sample size;
- some nonparamatric alternatives for the classical tests;
- multiple regression (meaning of the parameters, quantitative versus qualitative factors; estimating parameters, standard errors of the estimators, t-tests and confidence intervals for one linear combination of the parameters, F-tests for more than one linear combination of the regression coefficients);
- analysis of variance (one-way; two way, investigation of interaction)
Aims:
The participants get practical knowledge of the use of more advanced statistical models and techniques. They know the backgrounds, goals, assumptions and features of the data analysis techniques and are able to determine the appropriate statistical procedure, depending on the type of experiment, the research question and the distributional assumptions. They are able to interpret the results of the data analysis techniques and to judge their validity and they are skilled in the use of SPSS for the analysis of the data with various data analysis techniques.
Activities:
The course consists of class-work, studying a handbook and an obligatory practical work using SPSS.
Examination:
Written exam. The practical work has to result in a pass.
Literature:
- Statistical Methods and Data Analysis (fifth edition) by R. Lyman Ott and Michael Longnecker, ISBN 0-534-25122-6 (book store);
- A study guide available in English (WUR-shop).
