Nutrition and Health (MNH) / MSc

Aims

The MSc programme in Nutrition and Health offers a theoretical background in nutrition as well as a strong methodologically oriented training. This approach enables the nutritionist to function in the area of nutrition, but also in several related disciplines (e.g. public health, epidemiology, medical sciences, food science, etc).

Those with a master's degree in Nutrition and Health have knowledge and understanding of:
*General aspects of nutrition and health, both separately and in their intricate interrelationships
- Food composition and food availability ;
- Food consumption and dietary habits;
- Sensory research;
- Physiological and biochemical metabolism of foods;
- Dietary requirements;
- The effects of nutritional status and toxic agents on health and disease.
*Specific aspects depending on the specialization chosen. Within each specialization profiles may be followed focusing on different approaches of this specialization.
- Dietary Behaviour and Disease Prevention;
- Epidemiology and Public Health;
- Physiology and Nutrigenomics;
- Food Toxicology.

Those with a master's degree in Nutrition and Health do have the capacity to:
- Use general methods and techniques in nutrition research, depending on the specialization of interest;
- Evaluate scientific literature in nutrition research and related disciplines, depending on the specialization of interest;
- Design, conduct, analyze, and report research;
- Inter- and multidisciplinary define, structure and re-formulate nutrition and health related problems and put academic theory into practice of research, communication or commerce.

Educational orientation
Aim of the educational orientation is to offer the student the knowledge and skills to enter the post-MSc biology teaching programme to start as teacher in biology in Dutch secondary schools, or have a more general interest in education. An adequate choice of courses and a BSc programme which contains sufficient biology makes it possible to follow this orientation from each of the specializations. Graduates of this orientation are eligible to enter the teacher-training programme offered by e.g. IVLOS (Utrecht). Part of that programme can be scheduled in the MSc-programme, as an alternative for the internship.
More information can be found at the programme website. Students are encouraged to contact the study supervisor (Jill Idzinga) at an early stage for planning their programme in the educational orientation.
