Continuation courses:
This course serves, in combination with at least two other approved courses, as a partial fulfillment of a Minor in Education.
Contents:
Becoming a Teacher is a follow-up to the Didactic Skills course. The main difference is that students now apply their didactic skills in a real-life situation, either in a Secondary School or in one of the institutes for Professional Education (HBO).
Aims:
At the end of this course students will have:
- gained practical knowledge and experienced of current teaching practices and have answers to questions like: "What models for teaching and learning are used in contemporary education?";
- observed experienced teachers, and, with their help, have gained insight in important skills such as; creating a safe learning environment and actively involving students in the learning;
- developed the ability to make 'subject matter' or course content transparent and accessible for the learner.
Furthermore students will be able:
- to make clear to students what they are expected to do, to answer their questions appropriately, to discuss and clarify assignments, etc.;
- to a certain degree to maintain order in the classroom;
- to adequately use audio-visual aids;
- to reflect on their classroom experiences and is able to improve their performance based on that reflection.
Activities:
The students have to write a work-plan (including learning objectives based on former experiences) and participate in supporting meetings.
The students have to perform the activities described in the work-plan, perform observation assignments and actually teach approximately six lessons.
Throughout the course they reflect on their personal experiences by writing a logbook and a final reflection paper.
Examination:
The grade will be based on the quality of the work-plan (at the start of the course) and the quality of the reflection paper (at the end of the course).
Moreover, the student will be assessed by the teacher of the school at which the student carries out his/her practical.
Literature:
Literature will be provided at the start of the course.
