Contents:

The course consists of a combination of lectures, tutorials and computer practicals. It gives a review of classical and molecular genetics and cellular physiology: from DNA to protein. The following subjects are covered: classical genetics (Mendelian genetics, meiotic recombination, coupling); gene interactions; DNA replication, repair and reorganization; regulation of transcription; RNA processing and transport; protein synthesis and degradation; protein folding and transport; regulatory strategies; structure and function of chromosomes; genomics and genetic mapping; gene- and chromosome mutations and molecular evolution.

Aims:

The course aims at giving the student insight into genetic, molecular and biochemical processes. It also aims at teaching the student how to handle basic concepts in Genetics, Molecular biology and Biochemistry in -partly practically oriented- problems. The course provides a base for more specialised courses in a variety of scientific disciplines.

Activities:

- attending lectures;
- participation in tutorials and computer practicals according to the Student Guide General Genetics.

Examination:

The written exam contains open and multiple choice questions. The mark obtained for the computer practicals counts for 5% of the final mark (provided one passes the exam in the same period). See also the general study guide on the Internet.

Literature:

The general study guide will be distributed during the first lecture and can also be found on the Internet pages of Biochemistry (http://gcg.tran.wau.nl/local/Biochem/educatio).
A Student Guide General Genetics with tasks and indications for use of the textbook by Griffiths is available at the Centraal Magazijn or can be downloaded from the Internet site of Genetics (http://www.dpw.wau.nl/genetics.
The subject material for the examination can be found in following three text books:
- AJF Griffiths et al, 'An Introduction to Genetic Analysis' 7th edition (Kniphorst);
- H Lodish at al, 'Molecular Cell Biology', 5th edition (Kniphorst);
- JM Berg et al, 'Biochemistry', 5th edition (Kniphorst).
