Contents:

This course provides an introduction in the interdisciplinary study of cultural landscapes. Besides knowledge of historical topography (historical geography), the relationships between the actual visible landscapes with the hidden objects and structures of the soil-archive (the focus of archaeology), the remains of ancient buildings and built-up ensembles (the focus of historical architecture) and the relics of man made nature (the focus of historical ecology) will be brought under the student's attention.
Especially the long-range processes in the development of these landscapes (phases of stagnation and change and their impacts), will be underlined. From this point of view also attention will be paid to the goals and outcomes of heritage management in a practical and a theoretical way.

Learning outcomes:

- understanding the cultural landscapes of the Netherlands as an outcome of different processes by different actors from prehistory until recent times (the landscape-biography);
- knowledge of the relationship between different cultural historical disciplines;
- knowledge of the dynamic background of cultural landscapes and the implications of that understanding for heritage management;
- knowledge of the changing views in (the study of) historic landscapes and the impact of these changing views on preservation and assessment strategies.

Activities:

- literature study;
- lectures;
- workgroup sessions;
- case study analysis.

Examination:
