Language of instruction:

Dutch

Assumed knowledge on:

MIB-10306

Contents:

In this course a number of typical biotechnological production processes and their historical development will be discussed. In these developments cellular and molecular aspects as well as process technological aspects play a major role. The biotechnological production processes that are treated will give a broad overview of the use of biotechnological knowledge in the main application areas for biotechnology (pharmaceutical, medical, food and environmental technology application area).

Learning outcomes:

After following this course you should be able to:
- describe several classical biotechnological production processes;
- choose micro-organism for several biotechnological production processes;
- know the environmental factors that determine the growth of several commonly used micro-organisms;
- asses which environmental factor determines the growth and production in a given fermentation;
- apply simple mathematic models for growth kinetics and cell death;
- work together in a project team on a well defined biotechnological project;
- set-up a flow-sheet for the production process of a given biotechnological product;
- give arguments for the choices made in a biotechnological production process;
- present project results in a written report as well as in an oral presentation.

Activities:

- problem-oriented education;
- follow instruction lectures;
- work-out tasks;
- self study;
- discuss results of self-study with group members;
- work in a project team;
- write a scientific report;
- give an oral presentation.

Examination:

Individual written exam (75%)
Assessment of the group report and presentation (25%)
Both parts have to be passed

Literature:

The study guide is available at the Internet one week before the start of the course.
