This course consists of two parts. In the first part students learn the spatial economics in a context of road infrastructure. Classic as well as recent theories on the settlement of firms, revitalizing of inner cities and city management are presented. Further, methods for the efficiency of road infrastructure projects are investigated. Classic Benefit-Cost analysis are compared with recent developed methods.
The second part focusses on road infrastructure in the metropolitan landscape, its functioning and the necessity to make adaptations for a better fit to societal desires. Methods and techniques for investigating present traffic flows as well as for prognosis of expected flows in the future are presented. The Dutch "Trace-wet" and the related planning system for road networks is discussed. The theory is illustrated at the end with a number of practical examples in the present (VINEX locations, Schiphol, 2nd Maasvlakte and the KAN project) as well as in the future (among others Scenario Studies).
