Contents:

In this course different learning methods are combined: lectures, practical exercises and reflection on the subject matter through an assignment. Besides, a selection of literature has to be studied in which both theoretical and methodological aspects of spatial planning are discussed. In the lectures basic concepts of spatial planning are introduced and two different planning approaches are discussed: the 'decision oriented approach of planning' and 'reconnaissance planning'. The lectures about each approach are followed by a practical exercise (involving 5-7 group sessions from 1.15-5.15 pm). The assignment concerns the writing of a paper by a small group of students in which certain theoretical notions from both lectures and literature are related to planning practices.

Aims:

At the end of the course the student: - has a basic understanding of central concepts of spatial planning;
- has a basic understanding of theory and methodology of two different approaches in spatial planning;
