Contents:

This module, which addresses the basic principles of landscape architecture design, consists of the following components:
-a series of lectures examining fundamental concepts and axioms in landscape architecture;
- a design studio in which students conduct an assignment intended to explore the practical transposition of abstract ideas to an architectural idiom;
- excursions intended to help students construct their own framework for landscape architectural references, and exercises in freehand drawing.
These serve a dual purpose:
1. to improve draughtmanship;
2. to use drawing as a technique for exploring and analysing the landscape.

Aims:

- to provide insight into the conceptual framework underlying the discipline of landscape architecture;
- to provide insight into the various layers of the landscape;
- to provide insight into the development of form in the landscape;
- to provide insight into form and the meaning of the concept of "space" in landscape architecture;
- to introduce the basic concepts of landscape planning;
- to improve draughtsmanship.

Activities:

- freehand drawing.

Examination:

- lectures: written examination;
- design studio/freehand drawing/excursions: assessment of the assignments.
