LUP-11312 Het metropolitane landschap: geografie, planning en ontwerp

Contents:

This introductory course deals with highlights and core concepts in contemporary landscape architecture, land use planning and social-spatial analysis. These will be taught in the context of best practices both in the national and the international domain. The emphasis will be on introductory classes by the professors. The rationale of the curriculum will be explained as well as the consecutive common elements and diverging disciplinary tracks in the Bsc. The common denominator is knowledge of "landscape" and "human interventions". The following questions will be answered.
What forces are creating and changing landscape?
How do different stakeholdergroups in society perceive landscape and driving forces?
What is the role of professionals in design, planning and analysis?
What is the role of science in planning and design?
What is the role of art?

Aims:

1.elementary knowledge of theories and best practices;
2. elementary understanding of professional skills and attitude;
3. knowledge of history of landscape architecture, planning and analysis;
4. basic understanding of interdisciplinary character of landscape design and landscape planning.

Activities:

The professors will teach classes. Literature encompasses selected reading in English and in Dutch. Students will be invited to collect data from reports, journals and periodicals. These data will be used to produce an essay in the Dutch language or in English.

Literature:

Staff will produce a course outline. The outline is to be obtained with the bureau of landscape architecture at the start of the course. Students will be informed about the obligatory literature and the procedures for data collecting during the first class.
