Assumed knowledge on:

DEC-20806; DEC-20306

Continuation courses:

Central Themes in Development Economics (DEC-30306).

Contents:

The course focuses on the role of the agricultural and rural sectors in the development process and on policies that influence this role. The course builds on the introduction in agricultural and rural development (DEC-20806) and the course on rural households and livelihoods (DEC-20306). The focus is on the linkages between rural households and agricultural and rural development policies formulated at regional and national levels. This leads to attention for the analysis of rural household behaviour; a discussion of the respective roles of state, market and civil society in the formulation and implementation of regional and national policies; and, the role of rural institutions.

Aims:

a. students have insight into theoretical approaches in the economic analysis of agricultural and rural development;
b. capability to apply quantitative analytical methods for policy analysis;
c. insight into households' reactions on policies and policy measures.

Activities:

The lectures require a two-fold participation from student' side: the preparation of an introduction of the literature, and studying the literature to contribute to the discussion. Quantitative analysis and simulations are practised in weekly sessions.

Examination:

Written examination.

Literature:

A course guide with programme and literature is available at the secretariat of the Development Economics Group.
