Continuation courses:

Advanced Econometrics (AEP-50806), Economic Models (AEP-30806)

Contents:

Social scientists are often interested in relationships between different quantities, e.g. consumption and prices. The objective of econometrics is to quantify such relationships using available data and statistical techniques and to interpret and use the resulting outcomes. So, econometrics is the interaction between (economic) theory, data and statistical methods. The interaction of these three elements makes econometrics interesting and a must for the dedicated social scientist. The use of econometric tools stretches from economic and business disciplines to social science fields like sociology and history.
This course is for BSc-C and MSc level students in social science. The course gives insight in a number of econometric issues and techniques, where emphasis is on applying econometrics to research questions in the broad field of social sciences.

Aims:

- recognizing the relation between research questions from social sciences and the potential of econometric techniques to answer these questions;
- using various econometric techniques (e.g. estimation and testing) and understanding the results obtained
- understanding the backgrounds of these techniques.

Activities:

In an introductory lecture relevant research questions from the field of social sciences that are dealt with using econometrics are discussed, setting the scope for this course. The lectures discuss the theory and applications of these techniques. During the interactive lectures (werkcolleges) problem sets are worked out and discussed. At the computer practicals students work out exercises using econometric software (E-views). These exercises are also discussed during the interactive lectures.

Examination:

Written exam with essay questions. Assessment of practicals assignments
