Contents:

The content of the course focusses on greenhouse cultivation systems, greenhouse construction, greenhouse environment and crop response, root environment, aerial environment, environmental aspects, new and smart technology, climate control and energy consumption, logistics, automation, labor requirements and greenhouse management.
As a student you will be confronted with theoretical backgrounds and with methods that are generally used in protected cultivation. You will use this knowledge in analyzing and reasoning from the physical and crop physiological backgrounds in a wide variety of situations involving protected cultivation. Focus is both on the Dutch and on the international protected cultivation.

Aims:

The course aims to prepare for a major on Greenhouse Engineering and puts emphasis on calculation and analysis. At the end of the course the students:
- are able to identify problems and to come up with sound technical solutions for crop production in protected environments under given cultural, climatic and economic conditions;
- have sufficient basic domain knowledge to oversee problems on design in greenhouse cultivation;
- have knowledge in depth on technology in greenhouse horticulture and other protected cultivation activities;
- will have the ability to apply this knowledge to a wide scope of design problems in this area.

Lectures, exercises, practicals, excursion.

Examination:

Written exam and exercises and practicals reports.
