Contents:

The course Field crop technology covers automation for field crops focussing on integration of measuring, data management, decision systems and process control to a system approach of precision farming.
The course consists of the following topics: 1. Overview of developments of automation in agriculture 2. Physical principles of machine-crop interactions 3. Measurement systems including positioning, navigation and machine vision 4. Image processing 5. Data management and GIS-application 6. Decision systems (statistical models, neural networks, fuzzy logic, expert systems) 7. Process control 8. System approach of precision farming. The integration of processes, sensors, actuators and decision systems is worked out in depth via cases: storage of products, precision farming, automation of equipment (seeding/planting, distributing, harvest).

Aims:

At the end of the course, the students:
- know the state of the art in field crop automation;
- are able to implement measument set-ups;
- are able to manage measurement results in databases including GIS-applications;
- are able to apply the principles of Decision Support Systems;
- are able to conduct research to contribute to a system approach of precision farming.

Activities:

The course consists of lectures and practicals.

Examination:

Written exam and assessment of practicals.
