Contents:

The subject of this course is the use of biological processes in Environmental Technology. An overview is given of both technological and microbiological aspects of the processes of interest. Based on the general kinetics of biological processes, the design principles for waste water treatment, solid waste treatment, off-gas cleaning and soil remediation will be derived. Biological processes for the degradation and conversion of organic mater, nitrogen, phosphorus, sulphur under aerobic, anaerobic or anoxic conditions will be reviewed. If necessary physical -chemical processes will treated be to some extent.

Aims:

- the student gains an understanding in the fundamental principles underlying biological processes in Environmental Technology;
- the student is able to relate this knowledge via mathematical kinetic relationships to the design of systems for the biological treatment of soil, waste water, solid waste and off-gas;
- the student has an understanding of the operational aspects of the biological systems.

Activities:

Attending the lectures, studying the theory and making exercises.

Examination:

Based on a written exam.

Literature:

Lecture notes.
