Mandatory knowledge:

This course is subject to a formal intake procedure by the examiners. To start with the bachelor thesis, the student must have a study progress of at least 102 credits of the BDW programme, including all credits of the first year. As thesis subjects need to be prepared and arranged a few months before the start of the thesis the procedure is as following. The coordinator sends an e-mail to candidate students to register for either period 1 or period 5. Prior to the start in period 1, the study advisor will check after period 6 in the preceding year if the student has obtained at least 90 ECTS (including all first year credits). For starting the thesis in period 5, the ECTS check will be after period 2. If these requirements have not been met, the subjects of the thesis are not assigned. When the ECTS requirement is fulfilled just prior to period 1 respectively period 5, a subject should be agreed with the coordinator. Advanced Statistics (MAT-20306) and Skills Development and Professional Outlook (YAS-20303) should be followed prior to the BSc-thesis Animal Sciences (YAS-80312) or at the same time.

Contents:

Students investigate a scientific question making use of knowledge and skills learned during their BSc Animal Sciences (BDW).

Learning outcomes:

After successful completion of this course students are expected to be able to:
- organize the individual management of a research question through experimental research, literature study, laboratory analyses or analyses of data and to provide a scientific thesis and to give a scientific presentation.
- prove the skills in scientific writing, interpreting results and judgement of (parts of) scientific literature.

Activities:

- individually conducting a research, including writing a research proposal;
- writing a thesis and presenting the results orally.

Examination:

The research competences and the thesis report are evaluated by the thesis supervisor, a second reviewer evaluates the thesis report. The oral presentation and defence of thesis are also included in the final grade (see evaluation form which is included in the study guide).

Literature:

A study guide including guidelines for the thesis is available with the coordinator, and will be dealt with in an introductory lecture in the first week.
