Contents:
Information and communication systems nowadays play a vital role in our society. The course elaborates on designing and managing these information systems, a major challenge for the managers of an organization.
Learning outcomes:
After successful completion of this course students are expected to be able to:
a) define and describe a new business model that relies on the application of one or more of the following:
- web technology concepts;
- search methods;
- data acquisition methods;
- design requirements for user interfaces.
b) in the context of such a business model:
- interpret, adjust and adapt simple data models and UML process models;
- realize simple web-based functionality with information and communication technology;
- take balanced management decisions based on concepts of web technology and information system architecture;
- characterize targeted customers and use personalized marketing as part of the organizational strategy, facilitated by information systems;
- distinguish functionality, realisation and implementation of information systems;
- describe risks of unprofessional, illegal or unethical use of web technology and define the role of middle managers with respect to risk prevention and security;
- peer evaluate other designs of ICT-based solutions within the context of the course.
Activities:
- lectures;
- case work in groups;
- computer lab.
Examination:
- incremental casework report (20%);
- casework oral defence (15%) + casework (individual) peer review (10%);
- practicals (20%);
- written closed book exam (35%).
Each component needs a minimum mark of 5.5 to pass.
