Soil 2 (BBW, BIL, BMW); SGL 23312 Landscape Geography (BLP); SGL 22803 Soil and Landscapes of the Netherlands (BBN).

Contents:

The course focuses on the relationships between global geological processes, soil (forming) processes and chemical, physical and biological soil properties. Soil classification (Dutch system), soil quality, soil protection and the suitability of soils for different land use functions (plant growth in general, agriculture, nature and recreation areas) are related to soil properties and additional soil quality indicators. Practical's alternate the lectures and illustrate and deepen the treated topics. At the end of the course, a field excursion shows the relationships between geology, soils, and landscape (including land use) around Wageningen.

Learning outcomes:

After successful completion of this course students are expected to be able to:
- describe and explain global geological processes in relation to the genesis of landscapes and sediments;
- describe and explain the role of (forming) processes in relation to chemical, physical and biological soil properties;
- describe and explain soil properties and additional soil quality indicators in relation to soil quality, soil protection, soil classification and the suitability of soils for different land use functions.

Activities:

- attend lectures;
- practicals (compulsory);
- field excursion by bike (compulsory).

Examination:

- written test consisting of open questions, multiple choice questions, calculations.
