Contents:

In this course, various issues that are important for the implementation of sustainable breeding programs for farm animals will be discussed and put in the context of global sustainable food security. The course will pay special attention to the implementation in developing countries. Scientists with extensive experience in this domain will give lectures and supervise students during their case study. This summer course is intended for students in the field of Animal Sciences or Biology, with a basic knowledge of animal breeding, that are interested in getting acquainted with the implementation of breeding programs and research in an international context. The course is also open to students from other universities, and is listed as ELLS summer course. Dates for 2016: August 22 to September 2.

Learning outcomes:

After successful completion of this course students are expected to be able to:
- respond, in writing, on issues related to characterization and use of animal genetic resources
- understand the basic ideas of participatory approaches to understand needs of farmers;
- design a breeding program which meets the local environemental and market conditions;
- evaluate of alternative breeding programs in farm animals based on theoretical and practical examples;
- present a case study on the implementation of breeding program.

- writing case study report with a group of students.

Examination:

- individual assignment - personal essay (33%);
- cases and literature discussions in groups (33%);
- oral exam (33%);
- the minimum mark for all three components is 5.5.
