HNE-10806 Nutrition and Health II: Primer to Nutrition Research.

Contents:

The course is primarily an introduction and gives the students an overview of the field of nutrition. Students are introduced to:
- the nature and content of the broad field of nutrition, addressing nutrition and health, epidemiology, public health nutrition, physiology and toxicology;
- the type of research questions at the level of the cell, the individual and the population;
- jobs of alumni of the MSc Nutrition and Health programme.
Furthermore the course allows students to develop academic skills:
- working in groups.

Learning outcomes:

After successful completion of this course students are expected to be able to:
- define and describe scientific fields of Nutrition in relation to human health: Nutrition - Epidemiology and Public Health, Nutritional Physiology and Health Status, Molecular Nutrition and Toxicology, Sensory Science;
- recognize, describe, explain and give at least one example of a key research questions in the field of diet, lifestyle and health and disease and to understand the role of diet at the level of cell, individual and population;
- work together to solve group-wise a problem based case study.

Activities:

- the course is composed of 5 modules, each with their specific activities.
- fields within the domain of nutrition will be presented during lectures and through a problem based case.
- the alumni will present their current job in a lecture with ample opportunity to ask questions.

Examination:

Participation in the problem based education and practical's is compulsory.
The exam consists of one multiple choice exam (100%).

Course reader including literature can be obtained through WUR-Shop, Forum or the online study-store.
Book: to be announced (will be available through WUR-shop and online study-store).
Additional literature, documentation and tasks will be provided through the Blackboard learning environment.
