Contents:

New developments in soil chemistry enable application of sophisticated knowledge regarding speciation and multicomponent transport in describing and predicting availability and mobility of nutrients, contaminants, etc. in soils. The course focuses on experimental determination of the chemical distribution in relation to mobility and on computer simulation of its behavior. Especially new (multi surface) modeling approaches for adsorption onto (dissolved) organic matter (NICA-Donnan), metal oxides (CD-Music) and clays (Donnan) offer interesting opportunities. These approaches will be discussed for specific applications that are related to soil remediation, soil risk assessment, soil fertility, leaching and groundwater quality control.

Learning outcomes:

After this course, the student is expected to be able to:
- carry out experiments to determine adsorption isotherms, soil column breakthrough curves and specific soil characteristics, including interpretation of results, statistical data handling and writing a report;
- describe and analyze speciation and mass transport phenomena in soils using speciation and mass transport model calculations;
- predict compound behavior in soils;
- name applications and perspectives of soil chemical modeling.
