Language of instruction:

English

Assumed knowledge on:

Atmospheric dynamics and Boundary-layer processes

Contents:

- clarifying basic principles of atmospheric dynamics and boundary-layer processes using numerical exercises and computer-simulations;
- practical examples from numerical mathematics: numerical differentiation and integration.;
- learning how to use the different modules of a mesoscale meteorological model;
- understand the theory and details of such models;
- understand specific problems these models have;
- application of those models on certain cases, interpretation of results.

Learning outcomes:

After this course the student is expected to be able to:
- explain and discuss the principles and theory of atmospheric models on various scales for the understanding of weather, climate and air quality;
- increase the knowledge and understanding of the theory and to apply this knowledge in practical situations;
- identify and express the mathematics necessary to develop numerical models;
- classify and recognise specific problems of atmospheric models: initialisation (data-analysis), boundary conditions, input/output problems, parameterizations;
- apply and employ the practical applications of these models (what is possible with such models, what is not possible, interpretation of results).

Activities:

- simulating a real meteorological situation by means of a mesoscale model;
- performing exercises and projects;
- oral and written presentation of results.

Examination:

Assessment is based on the oral and written presentations.

Literature:

- Course manual;
- M.Z. Jacobson: 'Fundamentals of atmospheric modelling', Cambridge Univ. Press.
