Contents:

Planning Studio I is a continuation course of Integrated Studio: The metropolitan Landscape (LUP-12306). This studio offers the students the opportunity to discover the characteristic features of spatial planning and to get some experience with a real social-spatial problem of a region in the Netherlands. The exercise focuses on regional and local scale level for the spatial planning process. The existing situation as well as developments have to be described and analyzed in order to develop a regional strategic plan for the long term and a package of short-term actions. The first part will be held in Wageningen. In the second part the students have to work in the area to make interviews and observations and to present the results of their work.

Learning outcomes:

After successful completion of this course students are expected to be able to:
- explain the distinguishing marks and importance of spatial planning;
- recognize methods to communicate with the people in question, to pay attention to their interests, opinions and ideas, to draw them into the process and to discuss the experiences and results;
- recognize methods to make a description and analysis of the existing spatial organization of social activities, particularly the most important relations and developments;
- recognize methods to make a plan of the future organization of those activities and a set of policies and tools of intervention on different spatial scales and different time horizons;
- name the expertise, knowledge and skills that are needed for the spatial planning.

Activities:

Instruction lectures, group work, planning and design activities, report writing, presentations and discussions. These activities have to be performed individually or in groups of different amount of students.

Examination:

The work of the individual student is assessed on the basis of a written evaluation of the successive steps of the process, the content and presentation of the results and his/her contribution to the group work.

Literature:

A manual for this practical course will be handed out during the first group meeting.
