Contents:

Information systems in large organizations today are created by using ready development shells. At the core of these shells are techniques for modelling the processes of the organisation, in line with the organizations strategy. The group work will concentrate on Business Process Modelling (BPM). Next to the practical work, the course contains lectures that show the big business picture and the link with other topics in information management and in management in general.

Learning outcomes:

After the course, the students will have the set of competencies they need as a business process consultant, or in general as a professional in todays business world who is involved in information systems development as a manager. Specific points are to:
- understand what an ICT strategy involves and why it is important for an organization;
- understand why an ICT strategy should be aligned with logistic strategy, customer relationship management and ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning);
- appreciate the place of BPM (Business Process Modelling) and other modelling techniques in establishing an ICT strategy;
- be able to carry out BPM on a realistic case study;
- know what SOA (Service Oriented Architectures) are and why they can enhance flexibility of business operations;
- be able to implement a case with a state of the art software environment for BPM.

Activities:

- take a tutorial on BPM and other techniques using specialized software;
- implement a simplified WU case in that software;
- carry out a case study on BPM for the development for an Information System in a real company.

Examination:

Cases and individual assignments will be graded. A written or oral examination will conclude this course.
