Contents:

The course Strategic Planning in Forest and Nature Conservation is a continuation of the course FEM-20906. Whereas FEM-20906 focuses on the operational and strategic management of forest and nature on a local level, this course is orientated on strategic planning at regional level. By using methods and techniques of Strategic Environmental Assessment, first of all different strategic policy options for a specific region (Sumava NP, Zech Rep.) are developed. In the next step, strategic policy choices are analyzed based on an evaluation of the possible ecological and socio-economical effects of the different options. On the basis of information of various sources (lectures, literature, interviews, excursions, own observations) groups of students analyze and evaluate the policy in a specific region in relation with the forest and nature in that region. This case-study work is supported by lectures with different examples of Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA).

Learning outcomes:

After this course students will be able:
- to describe and explain the most important methods and techniques of ex-ante evaluation in forest and nature conservation;
- to describe, explain and apply SEA in forest and nature conservation;
- to recognize the social and political fields of influence in forest and nature conservation;
- to analyze regional plans in relation with forest and nature;
- to provide a professional report of the results and
- to present the results through a poster presentation.

- participation in the case-study assignment;
- written reporting of results;
- poster presentation of results.

Examination:

The student's final mark for this course will be based on:
- the results of a written examination;
- the result of an oral examination;
- the result of the report and the poster presentation.
