Before starting the BSc Thesis Tourism students should have successfully completed at least all first year courses; XTO-22306 Research Methods 2 and XTO-24312 International Field Practicum. Furthermore a positive advice of the study adviser is required.

Contents:

The BSc Thesis Tourism is an individual course in which various academic research skills are applied to a specific field, resulting in a paper (thesis), after which the study programme is completed.
In the BSc Thesis Tourism, students must demonstrate that they master the bachelor competencies to a satisfactory level and that they can independently apply obtained knowledge and skills to a chosen assignment. Successful completion of the bachelor thesis indicates that students are ready to enter a master programme.

Learning outcomes:

A BSc thesis is a written report consisting of a literature review on a scientific topic that is within the domain of your program and is established through independent research. after successful completion of the bachelor thesis students should independently be able to:
- formulate a concrete research or project proposal, based on the interpretation and delineation of a complex issue in the field of tourism;
- use relevant theory and scientific concepts to build a theoretical framework sufficient to address the issue;
- define a clear problem statement, objectives and research questions and formulate appropriate research methods;
- carry out a research plan, based on the knowledge and skills which are acquired in the bachelor program;
- present the methods, findings and results of the assignment clearly and systematically;
- work individually and independently in undertaking scientific research (under supervision);
- plan and carry out such work within the designated timeframe;
- defend the results of such work orally;
- reflect upon the research and the results;
- reflect upon personal action and thought throughout the thesis process.

Activities:

The course consists of three parts:
- formulate a research or project proposal;
- conduct the research;
- reflect on the research process, the theory and methods and the results.

Examination:

The programme uses a standard evaluation form for the assessment of the bachelor thesis. Criteria for the assessment are: the ability to execute a research (40% of the final mark), the ability to write a research report (40% of the final mark), the ability to deliver an oral presentation of the research (10% of the final mark), the ability to defend the thesis orally (10% of the final mark). The thesis work is always graded by two assessors: the supervisor and a second examiner. Both assessors are present during the presentation and the final discussion of the thesis. The second examiner is not personally involved in the thesis supervision and secures the reliability of the assessment. In some cases the examiner of the BSc Thesis Tourism will be involved in the assessment as well.
