Contents:

The focus of the course is on introducing students to the art and science of tourism systems analysis. Important tools and methods of systems analysis are conceptual modelling, integrated (environmental) assessment, and scenarios. In many practical settings it is not enough to understand a tourism system better; a key challenge is also to reach some kind of conclusion to inform decision makers amidst (deep) uncertainty. This requires assessment methods, such as cost-benefit analysis and multi-criteria analysis, and other methods that can handle both uncertainty and trade-offs.
Integration is not only a matter of knowledge, but also of practice and judgement. During the whole course, students will acquire hands-on experience with the tools for integration and assessment, also by working on case assignments.

Learning outcomes:

After completing the course, students should be able to:
- explain the use of systems analysis;
- explain the pros and cons of systems analysis;
- assess tourism from an integrated systems perspective;
- discuss the added value and shortcomings of key methods and tools of systems analysis;
- apply the key methods & tools of systems analysis to explore tourism systems and evaluate tourism projects.
