Language of instruction:

Dutch

Assumed knowledge on:

MAT-14803 Mathematics 1 and physics at VWO level.

Contents:

The course covers miscellaneous topics of basic physics and serves as a preparation for physics-oriented courses taught at a more advanced stage. The selection of topics includes classical mechanics, physics of fluids, the kinetic theory of gases, thermodynamics and thermal physics including radiative heat transfer. The course includes traditional lectures, problem sessions and laboratory training. The latter implies the performance of selected experiments dealing with topics covered by the course.

Learning outcomes:

After successful completion of this course students are expected to be able to:
- organize their new knowledge within a logical framework;
- express, both verbally and in terms of mathematics, their acquired knowledge;
- apply, through systematic and logical reasoning, the acquired knowledge when solving various problems encountered in real life practice;
- apply the basics of dimensional analysis;
- properly interpret and objectively judge the outcome;
design and construct simple experimental set-ups, perform a variety of experiments, analyse and discuss the collected data, and writing a scientific report.

Specifically, students are expected to:
- apply Newton's laws;
- apply the laws of dynamics using differential and integral calculus;
- apply the work-energy theorem;
- apply the laws of conservation of energy, impulse and angular impulse;
- understand the pressure and flow phenomena of non-viscous and viscous fluids;
- apply the first law of thermodynamics;
- understand the basics of heat transfer by conduction and radiation;
- apply steady-state transport of heat by conduction and radiation;
- apply the kinetic theory of ideal gases.

Activities:

- prepare and attend the lectures;
- preceding the daily tutorials;
- learn and understand by exercises;
- practical courses are obligatory.

Examination:

The course is concluded with a written exam. A compendium will be available.
The final mark can be assessed only after completing all practical courses.
