Language of instruction:

Dutch and/or English

Continuation courses:

Bio-organic Chemistry II (ORC-12903) for BML, BBT and BLT
Environmental Organic Chemistry (ORC-13303) for BMK

Contents:

The course Bio-organic chemistry I gives a conveniently arranged introduction into the basics of organic chemistry and forms a solid basis for follow-up courses such as Bio-organic Chemistry II (ORC-12903) and Environmental Organic Chemistry (ORC-13303). Structure and reactivity of molecules, reaction mechanisms, stereochemistry, and interactions between molecules form the backbone of this course. The course is composed of tutorials and a practical part.

Learning outcomes:

After successful completion of this course students are expected to be able to:
- recognize structure and reactivity of different classes of organic compounds;
- identify and apply basic organic chemical reactions;
- explain and demonstrate reaction mechanisms;
- practice basic practical laboratory skills and techniques in organic chemistry.

Activities:

Study the textbook following the presented study guide and exercise assignments from the Online Web-based Learning tool. During the tutorials other questions are exercised and discussed with the teacher. In the practical part, different basic laboratory skills are exercised, like destillation, recrystallisation, extraction, and chromatography. To work safely and concern for the environment are important aspects in this part.

Examination:

Open questions and practical.

Literature:

Practical manual and textbook ('Organic Chemistry' and OWL (with eBook) 7e by J. McMurry, ISBN 9781408032947) are available at the WUR-shop.
