Language of instruction:

Dutch

Assumed knowledge on:

Subjects of the first four periods of the first year BIL

Contents:

Introduction in design and design processes about land use and land and water management problems is focussed on soil and water conservation and irrigation interventions. By means of structured tasks students first analyse the problems and thereafter consider and analyse different design options. For one of those design options the different phases of the detailed design process will be passed through. During this course two cases will be dealt with: an irrigation & water engineering case and a soil & water conservation case. The course includes fieldwork and practicals.

Learning outcomes:

After successful completion the student will be able to:
- analyze a complex problem and to split it up into sub items;
- determine the phases and characteristics of the design process;
- make an assessment of different land use types and suggest options for areas where interventions are of importance;
- formulate design criteria for different interventions;
- elaborate both a simple irrigation and a simple soil and water conservation design and determine the pros and the cons of the design;
- understand the importance of participative design processes.

Activities:

- attendance of working groups;
- execution of assignments;
- participation in fieldwork;
- oral presentation of a design;
- writing report.

Examination:

Based on attendance, assignments and reports.

Literature:

- Course guides, including instructions;
- Readers.
