Contents:

The BSc-programme Plant Sciences is completed by two elements, the Essay Plant Sciences and the Project Proposal Plant Sciences. These elements can only be taken after permission of the study supervisor. The Project Proposal Plant Sciences focusses on the formulation, planning and preparation of a project in the field of Plant Sciences. A database is available to choose a thesis subject (http://www.dpw.wau.nl/mlobase). Students will have to work out a detailed project proposal on the selected topic under supervision of a scientific staff member. They learn how to design a research project starting from orientation on the problem by literature study, followed by problem definition, formulation of a project proposal and planning of research phases within a given time period. Students familiarise themselves with various practical aspects regarding experimental methods and techniques, organisation of materials and facilities, data collection and data processing, and costs. The project proposal will be presented written and orally within the chairgroup where the proposed project will be done. The students evaluate their learning experiences in a reflective report.

Aims:

The Project Proposal Plant Sciences is a concluding element of the BSc Plant Sciences. After completion of this course the student is able to:
- design a research project (theoretical background, problem definition, design of research plan, project planning);
- get acquainted with practical aspects of research work (experimental methods, data processing, costs, safety, ethics);
- write and present a project proposal (problem definition, research plan, planning, costs, feasibility).

Activities:

Analysis of learning goals and preferences with respect to thesis work. Working out a detailed project proposal on a topic in the field of Plant Sciences. Oral and written presentation, and evaluation of the proposal.

Examination:

The Project Proposal Plant Sciences will be assessed on the basis of an evaluation form and marked with a testimonium by the supervisor.
