Orientation Plant Sciences II

Contents:

The aim of this course is to obtain insight in the various aspects that are of importance in the food chain. Barley and tomato have been chosen as examples to demonstrate the 'farm to fork' approach. Orientation on Plant Sciences I is focussed on quality aspects, while the follow-up course (II) deals with crop protection. The research comprises two parts: i) which external and internal factors influence the quality of tomato and ii) which aspects (shape, size, taste, plasticity, color, sugar content) determine the quality of tomato. The first part will be done by studying the literature and the second part will be carried out by doing experiments. A workplan will be designed and carried out. Designing experiments for taste panels are included. A major goal of the course is to develop a critical attitude with regard to data analyses and interpretation. Plenary sessions will be held at regular intervals to inform each other and to discuss the results. At the end of the course the students will write a report and give a presentation of the results In the second week there will be an excursion to the vegetable auction Barendrecht, experimental station Naaldwijk, a biological and regular tomato grower.
