Orientation Plant Sciences I and II
Contents:
This course is especially designed for first year students in Plant Sciences. The idea is that students will get a global impression of the broadness of this study, which ranges from crop protection, plant breeding, agronomy to horticulture. All kinds of subjects will be discussed and whenever possible accompanied by field excursions, experiments in the laboratory, excursions to institutes and companies, and demonstrations in the laboratory. The subjects range from ecological to molecular aspects of plant sciences, from pesticides usage to biological control, from biotechnology involving genetically modified crops to organic farming, from agronomic production systems to nature conservation, from tropical production systems to the advanced and tightly controlled production systems in greenhouses.
Aims:
At the end of this course it is expected that the student is familiar with the main specializations and various approaches in plant sciences. A first step will be made in learning how to search the databases for scientific literature.
Activities:
Lectures, laboratory experiments, (field)excursions, discussions.
Examination:
The final grade is based on a written examination.
Literature:
