Assumed knowledge on:

Soil Science 1 (SOQ-20804) or an alternative introduction into soil science

Contents:

General introduction in the global geomorphology and soil science with specific attention to the role of plate tectonics and climate change on landscape and soil genesis in the quaternary. Major landscapes will be discussed in relation to major soil groups with special attention for classification, regional distributions, genesis, and land use options.

Aims:

After the course students have insight in the major soils and landscapes of the world including their structure, genesis, and functioning in time and space.

Activities:

Attend lectures, study reader, carry out practical exercises including aerial photo interpretation, and computer modeling of major processes

Examination:

- written exam (75%)
- reports on practical exercises (25%).

Lecture notes and handouts can be obtained from the student administration at the Laboratory of Soil Science and Geology.
