Contents:

This course provides a broad-based overview of leisure and tourism in a historical perspective and a worldwide, multicultural context. Leisure and the associated sub-disciplines will be analysed as well as leisure behaviour and the associated impacts on the environment. In addition, societal and philosophical philosophies will be discussed relating to leisure and tourism. In summary, students will have addressed such questions as how are leisure and environments conceptualised; what developments took place during the past centuries in relationship to leisure and environments; what role does leisure play in different philosophical systems; how do leisure concepts relate to different groups, norms, and value systems; what differences exist in the context of leisure within the various social sciences; and what is the relationship between leisure and space.

Aims:

- analyse the relation between leisure and environment in all its facets, in a holistic perspective;
- analyse the meanings, experiences and ideas about leisure, tourism and environment in different countries and cultures;
- imagine and compare the experiences and meanings of leisure, tourism and environments of different countries and cultures;
- analyse, classify and order specific persons, places, events, philosophies and political theories from history which have influenced the development and establishment of leisure, tourism and environment;
- compare different nationalities and cultures on the former analysis;
- analyse and bring together information from different approaches and disciplines in relation to a specific subject or problem in the field of leisure and environment.
