Contents:

This course is an introduction in the study of human geography. It addresses developments in human geographic theory on the relationships between businesses, households and institutions and their social and spatial environment. It focuses primarily on the rural and urban metropolitan region of the Netherlands and Western Europe in the global context of cultural, ecological, technological, economic and political transformations.

Aims:

Upon completion of the course, students will:
- have theoretical and conceptual understanding of different human geographical approaches and the way they represent the relationships between spatial patterns and structures and the spatial behaviour of businesses, households and institutions in the sphere of living, work and leisure;
- understand the way in which spatial patterns and structures of the rural and urban metropolitan region of the Netherlands and Western Europe have been transformed in recent decades;
- understand the most important economic, socio-cultural and political processes that have determined these transformations.
