Contents:

This course integrates disciplinary knowledge of soil physics, hydrology, micro-meteorology and plant physiology. The focus is on behaviour and movement of water and solutes in the soil-water-vegetation-atmosphere system. The following items are discussed: unsaturated soil water flow, soil hydraulic functions, root water uptake by plants, evapotranspiration, transport of solutes, crop growth, water- and salt stress, preferential flow, irrigation and drainage. During the practical we will measure water contents, pressure heads and conductivities in soils. The agrohydrological model SWAP will be introduced and applied to various hydrological situations.

Aims:

Knowledge of behaviour and movement of water and solutes in the soil-water-vegetation-atmosphere system. Insight in effects of soil transport processes and management measures on crop growth. Exercise in measurements of soil water content, pressure head and hydraulic conductivity. Knowledge of methods to determine soil physical properties. Introduction to agrohydrological model SWAP. Use of this model to analyse the interaction between soil transport processes and crop growth.

Activities:

Study of lecture notes and exercises. Study of practical- and model manual. Performing and analysing measurements in soil physics laboratory. Performing and analysing model simulations.

Examination:

A written exam will be given which covers the contents of lecture notes and exercises. Knowledge gained during the practical is separately tested.

Literature:

Soil Physics and Agrohydrology, lecture notes distributed at WUR shop.
