Contents:

This course focuses on the relationship and mutual influences between (agricultural) science on the one hand and socio-economics, policy and politics on the other hand. The aim of this course is analysis of and expression of opinion in complex societal questions in the field of agricultural and life sciences, with special emphasis on plant and animal sciences. The position and responsibilities of scientists are central themes in this respect. In addition, students get insight in and experience with basic principles of ethics.

Aims:

After having completed this course, the student:
- has insight into different views on scientific rationality;
- is able to analyse and take position in complex societal questions in the field of agricultural and life sciences;
- is able to make a connection between ethical, social and cultural aspects of a problem and its scientific aspects related to modern life sciences;
- is able to integrate the analysis of various aspects of a problem (as mentioned above) into an essay on an ethical subject relevant to plant or animal sciences.

Activities:

- lectures;
- participation in discussion & working groups;
- analysis of current societal problems;
- writing an essay.

Examination:

Evaluation of essay(s) and written examination.
