Language of instruction:

Dutch

Assumed knowledge on:

CBI-10306 Cell Biology 1

Contents:

The structure, development and physiology of the vegetative angiosperm plant body is studied at the level of the cell, the tissues, the vegetative organs, and of the whole plant. Focus will be on the form and function relationships at these levels with respect to the main functions of the plant, i.e. photosynthesis, the transport of e.g. water, ions and sugars and the uptake of water and ions from the soil. Also adaptations to environmental conditions are discussed.

Aims:

Creation of a good knowledge of the relationship between structure and function of the various vegetative parts of the plant body. Getting experience in the methods used to investigate and analyse the structural and physiological phenomena involved.

Activities:

The course consists of lectures and practicals. In the practical part physiological experiments will be performed and microscopical plant structure will be studied; this part also includes discussion sessions on the results of the practicals.

Examination:

The theory will be tested by two written exams, in Dutch, one after 4 and one after 8 weeks. Reports about some aspects of the practical work have to be written and will be evaluated.

Literature:

The handbook "Biology of Plants" (edited by Raven, Evert & Eichhorn, sixth edition) will be used. Next to this book, a set with questions and answers will be distributed, as well as syllabi for the practical work and a study guide.
