Contents:

The course Chemistry of Life Sciences I gives a conveniently arranged introduction in chemistry, with a focus on natural products. Structure and reactivity of molecules, reaction mechanisms, stereochemistry, interactions between molecules, and equilibrium phenomena form the backbone of this course. It forms a solid basis for further studies in molecular sciences and life sciences. The course is composed of tutorials and a practical part.

Aims:

- to gain insight and to obtain understanding in basic organic chemical reactions.;
- to help to understand more complex biological reactions, molecular interactions and chemical equilibria.;
- to train practical laboratory skills in organic and physical chemistry.

Activities:

Study the textbook and exercise the questions following the presented study guide. During the tutorials other questions are exercised and discussed with the teacher. In the practical part, which is closely related to the theoretical part, different laboratory skills are exercised, like distillation, extraction, chromatography, spectrometry and pH determinations, making use of natural products.

Examination:

Multiple-choice exam.

Literature:

The study guide will be given. The textbook "Bio-organische chemie voor Levenswetenschappen" by J.F.J. Engbersen and Ae. de Groot has to be bought at the bookshop. Manual to the practical part, exercises and safety instruction are available at the WUR-shop.
