Language of instruction:

English

Assumed knowledge on:

MAT-10306 or MAT-10806

Continuation courses:

Minor/Major: Theoretical Biology; Mathematics; Aquatic Ecology and Water Quality.

Contents:

This subject is meant for expanding the student's knowledge on the construction and analysis of models in biological and physical-chemical environmental processes. Simple simulations and advanced techniques such as phase plane analysis, stability analysis and bifurcation analysis will be taught. Each technique will be illustrated on specific examples stemming from e.g. population biology, epidemiology, ecology and water quality science.

Aims:

1. students will get an overview of the different mathematical models available for processes in natural systems;
2. students will be able to apply various techniques (including simulation) necessary for the analysis and evaluation of the mathematical models;
3. students will be able to formulate a model for simple problems presented to them.

Activities:

Lectures; Self-study; Computer practical, see: EDUweb

Examination:

Hand-in problem solutions; Written examination (3 hour)

Literature:

A reader will be composed within which part of the book by L.Edelstein-Keshet (Mathematical Models in Biology, Random house, New York, 1988) will be incorporated.
