Contents:

During the lectures in Hydraulics and Hydrometry the flow of water both in natural and man designed systems (rivers, channels, irrigation systems) will be studied and the way flow variables (velocity, pressure, discharge) in these systems can be measured. The aim of the subject is to give the student a profound theoretical base and a practical understanding in fluid mechanics. Thus processes like the movement of water in rivers can be studied or problems like the design of irrigation systens can be handled.
The following items will be treated: fluids and their characteristics; hydrostatics, pressure and pressure measurements, forces on walls; movement of fluids; the momentum equation (+ applications); the energy equation (+ applications); laminar and turbulent flow; steady flow in pipes; uniform steady flow in open channels; non-uniform steady flow in open channels; hydrometry.

Aims:

Acquire theoretical and practical understanding of fluid mechanics; learn how to calculate static and dynamic pressure of water against structures; learn how to execute hydraulic calculations assuming steady flow in closed pipes and open channels; learn how to execute hydrometric measurements through theoretical understanding and knowledge.

Activities:

The subject Hydraulics and Hydrometry consists of two parts:
1. theoretical part consisting of lectures and the solution of problems: attending the lectures; be present and participating at the seminars; studying the lecture books used during the lectures; solving problems in relation to hydraulics and hydrometry;
2. practical part consisting of practical experiments: doing practical experiments in the hydraulics laboratory and working-out the measurements.
It is absolutely necessary to participate actively from the beginning of the course for a succesfull result.

Examination:

The subject Hydraulics and Hydrometry includes 6 credits, from which 80% is reserved for the theoretical part and 20% for the practical part. The final mark will be determined according to this ratio.
Both for the theoretical part and the practical part a minimum mark of 5,0 is required. After participating an examination or practical work, always the last obtained mark per part will count.

Literature:

- Book "Fluid Mechanics", 3rd or 4th edition, by J.F. Douglas, J.M. Gasiorek and J.A. Swaffield.
- Book "Hydrometry" by W. Boiten.
- Guide for the practical experiments.
The books are for sale at the secretariat of the Sub-department Water Resources.
