Language of instruction:

Dutch

Contents:

The course is made up of two parts, the first and major part (4.5 ECTS) is a combination of "college" and "werkcollege" , the second part (1.5 ECTS) comprises two case studies on the application of various aspects of genetics.
The first part gives an overview of genetics from the molecular level to the population level. Subjects are: classical genetics (Mendel, meiotic recombination, genetic linkage), structure and function of chromosomes, genetics of prokaryotes, molecular genetics, recombinant DNA technology, genomics, mutation, chromosomal aberrations and rearrangements, population genetics and quantitative genetics.
In the second part students will work (problem oriented) on examples of the current application of genetics in society.

Aims:

Students will get an understanding of the basic genetic processes as an indispensable part of the life sciences. You will get insight in the fields of application of genetics and you should be able to judge genetic aspects of societal questions. In addition, the course serves as an essential background for specialized, advanced courses.

Activities:

Participation in "werkcolleges" / computermodules, simultaneously studying the textbook following the instructions in the student guide.

Examination:

Written open-book exam, based on genetic problems. The results of the computer modules count at 10% of the final mark (only if computer modules and exam are done in the same period). The results of the problem oriented part are also part of the final mark.

Literature:

Textbook: Griffiths et al., An Introduction to Genetic Analysis, 8th (or 7th) edition. (Kniphorst Bookshop). Student guide: description of the details of the course. Available at the internet site of the Genetics Group and as a hardcopy at the first day of the course.
