Contents:

In order to be sustainable farming systems must satisfy the needs and regulations set by the society in which it functions. Moreover, the system must generate enough income for the people working at the farm. In this multidisciplinary course views from business economics, animal science and plant science are combined and used as a tool for analysing the level of sustainability of specific farming systems.

Aims:

Participants get to know the basics of business economics, such as theory related to finance, costs and income. Moreover they get to know the basic theory on mineral legislation, animal welfare and other issues raised in society. They learn how to apply these theoretical notions for specific practical cases. In the end participants will be able to analyse farming systems from different perspectives. They are able to read a balance sheet, to calculate costs and yields and farm income. Moreover they can address ecological and societal concerns related to the farming system under study.

Activities:

Lectures, case study and self study.

Examination:

Final result is based on the group report (40%), group presentation (10%) and individual written exam (50%).
