Language of instruction:

English

Assumed knowledge on:

Knowledge on the principles of Ecology and principles of organismal biology

Continuation courses:

FCF-30306 Fisheries; FCF-32306 Aquaculture production systems; FCF-31806 Aquacultural physiology

Contents:

The life history, biology and ecology of (shell)fish, with special reference to the important species for fisheries, aquaculture and nature conservation of marine resources. Life history to a large extent determines the (im)possibilities for culture, fisheries and conservation management. Subjects on both the organism (reproduction, feeding, homeostasis, migration, habitat use), the population (population ecology, fish communities) and ecosystem level are treated.

Aims:

Obtain and apply basic knowledge of biological principles on the organism and population level with special reference to life history characteristics of fish and shellfish species that are of importance to aquaculture and fisheries.

Activities:

Lectures, practicals, computer exercises.

Examination:

Written Exam.

Literature:

Course book.
