Contents:

This course focuses on uptake and extension of the general basic knowledge on environmental technology. It is in fact a bridge to the more specific courses in environmental technology such as Biological Processes in Environmental Technology, Physical-chemical Processes in Environmental Technology and Water and Waste Management in Developing Countries. It is compulsory for students who will follow the specialisation Environmental Technologies. In the course attention is paid to molecular and phase separation and contact processes, biological and chemical conversion processes and the set-up and application of mass balances. The set-up and application of mass balances is necessary to be able to design processes in the field of environmental technology, to develop simulation models, and to optimise treatment processes for polluted waters, off gases, polluted soils, and wastes. The mathematical background of the solution of these mass balances is given as well as physical, chemical, and microbiological aspects that are relevant for the development and application of separation and conversion processes are discussed. Also practise examples of the application of environmental technology are discussed.

Aims:

The objective of the course is to provide the student with a broad package of fundamental knowledge of environmental technology which enables him or her to study the more advanced MSc courses in Environmental Technology.

Activities:

- Attending lectures;
- Studying theoretical aspects;
- Studying specific cases in the field of wastewater treatment, waste treatment, soil remediation and air pollution control;
- Working in groups.

Examination:

Based on written examination and participating in the working groups.

Literature:

A course manual and reader are available.
