Environmental Systems Analysis (ESA-20406)

Contents:

This course focuses on Integrated Environmental Assesment of complex environmental issues at a regional scale. The course builds upon earlier courses Environmental Systems Analysis (ESA-20406 in particular). Regional environmental management requires a proper evaluation of the potential of an area for different environmental functions and uses (including nature conservation, agriculture, recreation, housing and transport), and possible conflicts between these functions and uses. In this course, we will study the theory and a selection of methods that are typically used in regional environmental assessments to analyse options for multifunctional land use in an integrated way.

Aims:

After the course, students are able to understand, apply and critically discuss in detail the theory and selected methods in relation to:
- environmental function analysis;
- conflict analysis;
- cost-benefit analysis;
- environmental policy analysis;
- integrated regional management.

Activities:

Attend lectures and seminars, participate in discussions, fulfil several (group)assignments and present the results.

Examination:

Based on written examination and participation during the case studies.

Literature:

A course manual and reader are available.
