Contents:
In this course students apply the knowledge acquired in Biology and Management of Plant Pathogens, Insects and Weeds part I (VIR-20304) in order to study the effects of and integration of different methods of pest management. The course focuses on intervention strategies that are designed to prevent crop damage with emphasis on environmentally safe methods. Lectures deal with the epidemiology of plant pests, diseases and weeds, and with state-of-the art information on integrated pest control (Organic farming, Cultural control, Food-web interactions, Biological Control, Chemical control, Biotechnology for pest control). An important aspect of the course is an experimental research project that will be executed in working groups of 2-3 students. Interactions between different plant pests will be examined, and a suitable intervention method will be developed to reduce the potential damage of these pests. Integration of different control methods will be encouraged. Research projects will be concluded by a statistical analyses of the results, and presented as a short scientific communication and an oral presentation.
Aims:
The student will acquire knowledge on different methods of pest management to be used for the prevention of damage caused by plant pests, diseases and weeds. Emphasis is on environmentally sound and safe methods of pest control. By focusing on the interactions between plant pests and the abiotic and biotic factors that affect these pests, students are taught how decisions about integrated pest management can be arrived at. During the independent research project, the student learns to formulate a research question and to execute the research required to answer this question. Finally, students become familiar with data analyses, reporting and oral presentation of scientific research.
Examination:
A short scientific communication, oral presentation and written exam (epidemiology only).
Literature:
A short reader (ENT-20304) at the Laboratory of Entomology. Further literature will be made available during the introductory lecture.
