Expected knowledge on:

Social Scientific Analysis of Environmental Issues (ENP-10306), Environmental Policy Instruments (ENP-10806)

Contents:

Environmental problems often occur as problems that need technological solutions. The social sciences study these mostly technically defined problems in a societal context. This course especially deals with the forecasting, development and use of environmentally sound technology in modern society. The main goal of this course is to get students acquainted with the societal dimensions of developing and managing environmental technological systems within different sectors of production and consumption.

Aims:

At the end of this course students: - know how to define (environmental) technology;
- see the relationship between technology development and society;
- will be able to assess the possible role of environmental technology in sustainable development;
- will be able to value the (environmental and social) risks of technological systems;
- will be able to distinguish and value different contemporary approaches and applications of sustainable technology in society.

Activities:

The course is separated into 3 sections, from theoretical to practical.
The first section of lectures deals with definitions of technology and environmental technology, historical approaches towards technology development and the rise of environmental problems, related to technology.
In the second section of lectures, contemporary approaches to sustainable technology development will be introduced, like technological transition management, back-casting, and constructive technology assessment (CTA). In the third secton, groups of students will apply these approaches to a particular system of provision, for instance: food, housing, industry, urban infrastructure, or chemistry.
This group work may encompasses excursions to different environmental technology projects in the Netherlands. The students will work together to organize and prepare the different excursions.
The course ends with writing a group-paper in which both theory and practice of environmental technological change are combined. In the paper a case will be discussed around one or more of the themes in section 3. At the end the papers will be presented to the group.

Examination:

Exam and group-paper (50/50).
